5th Annual Strike Out Stroke

In celebration of National Stroke Awareness, the 5th Annual Strike Out Stroke baseball game with the Lincoln Saltdogs was held Saturday, June 13, 2009.

Nebraska stroke survivors, friends, family, and supporters were invited to Haymarket Park to help cheer on the Saltdogs and honor those who have been affected by the disease. Strike Out Stroke educational materials and promotional items, including water bottles, brochures, magnets and fans were distributed prior to the first pitch.

This year’s pitcher was 16-year-old Nick Weiss. Weiss suffered a series of strokes while in the womb that left him with a variety of physical limitations including a single kidney, a deformed jawbone, facial palsy, partial hearing loss and esophageal atresia. He was never supposed to live past infancy.

Today, however, Weiss continues to lead an active lifestyle and was recently given special permission to train with an advanced Thai boxing class at his Omaha martial arts gym. Weiss is proof that stroke doesn’t discriminate.

The evening with the Lincoln Saltdogs is one of several statewide events for Strike Out Stroke, a Nebraska public education campaign designed to raise awareness of stroke warning signs. The events are sponsored by the Nebraska Cardiovascular Health Program with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Nebraska State Stroke Association.
